West Ham United were reportedly favourites to sign Seri before he embarked on a nightmare Premier League season at Fulham.
The 2018/19 season was one of huge disappointment for each and every Fulham fan but Jean Michael Seri was perhaps the biggest let down of the lot.
A hugely talented midfielder who had established as one of Ligue 1’s most elite performers at Nice, Seri had been targeted by Barcelona and hailed by none other than Xavi before arriving at Craven Cottage for a club record £26 million.
What a coup he looked at the time. And what a failure it looked for West Ham United to miss out on the Ivory Coast international to their London neighbours.
Tuttomercatoweb claimed that West Ham were leading the chase for Seri’s signature, shortly before Fulham pulled off what looked like one of the most surprising transfer coups of 2018.
One year on, however, absolutely no one at the London Stadium will be ruing their near miss now.
According to CalcioNapoli24, Fulham are now willing to sell Seri for just £13 million, half what they paid for him, after a single, disastrous season in the Premier League which ended in relegation.
There were a few moments of quality, including that long-range wonder-goal against Burnley, but for the most part Seri looked lightweight, disinterested and far from suited to playing in the hustle and bustle of English football.
West Ham might have had their own midfield flops in Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez. But at least they didn’t cost £26 million.
